I confirm that with dell P2418ht it works great - but need to set the display ratio to 4:3. It uses 800x600 resolution so I guess that any touch screen monitor which can be set tom4:3 ratio Will work

is analog input meant to only play the analog in sound by itself? If you did a MODX sound with it you couldn't have different effects as the input right? I got an input device but can't get effects on it. What am I missing? I don't understand why your says "Common Audio" at top of 3:40 . Mine says common part. ??

DX7's are dirt cheap dumpster dives compared to analog icons like the Minimoog Model D, Juno-106, Jupiter 8 and Prophet 5 which usually start around $5,000. I got my DX7 in 2008 for $300. I just bought a Hypersynth Hcard-701 (equal to 400 memory cards) for $199, almost the value of the synth itself.

Great explanation of hacking existing presets to see how they work! I have been learning this programming since I acquiring two DC7’s this past year to use for creating sound packs for Akai MPC. I am just starting to release my soundpacks made from these and dozens of other synths.

Great video. What can't be disputed about the DX7 is that its output signal was noisy (a very noticeable white/pink noise hiss) even at moderate volume levels. This is due to the multiplexing the single Operator chip over a million times a second and using a Digital to Analog converter that has a dynamic range scaler output that is changing at nearly the same rate. I have found a simple adjustment that takes only a few minutes to reduce the noise and not lose any high end from the output. I have a DX7 Noise Reduction video on it on my channel.

The sound cartridges (and the voices in memory out of the box - also from a sound cartridge) were designed for musicians as a starting point to make their own sounds. I heard that the Yamaha engineers were only given 10 days (back around 1983) when the DX7 first came out to develop the voices for 4 cartridges. 2 for Europe, 2 for the US. Each cartridge holds two banks of 32 voices (patches/programs). That is 256 patches total, or over 25 voices a day! For an 8 hour day, that is one voice less than every 20 minutes - from scratch. They simply didn't have time for many elegant patches, just enough for people to use it out of the box and not just put out a sine wave (a perfect flute with no overtones).

Nice video! I too would not say the DX7 was difficult to program, but it is a bit cumbersome. Before the DX7, synthesizers were all analog and thus all their controls were at your finger tips. On the DX7, the controls are routed to the display a la cart - one at a time, so it takes you a few moments to find a parameter and bring it up for editing. On an analog synthesizer, you can change voice parameters without having to replay notes. On the DX7 you must replay notes if you are changing most but not all of the "purple" parameters but you don't need to replay notes if changing the "brown" parameters. Brian Eno is the master of programming the DX7. I wrote my own PC MIDI GUI that allows you to change all the DX7 parameters as they are all shown on the screen at once, but you still must re-play to hear the voice parameter changes. It looks a bit "busy" at first, but it does make programming easier. I have a video of it on my channel in the DX7 playlist. I can also give you the GUI for free but you will have to build your own MIDI Adapter based on the Arduino DUE which has two serials ports and very high speed UARTs to make it fast. The GUI is under development because I keep adding to it, but go months at a time between updates. I can build an adapter for cost if you are not handy in electronics. Anyway, great video on the DX7.

I think the owners manual probably caused a lot of the “it’s impossible to program” myth. I have the mk ll and as a retired graphic designer l was really thinking of re-releasing my own version but not something l want to do now.

OMG, this is hugely helpful! The documentation that comes with the MODX isn't bad, but it really doesn't walk you through the process of how to do common things. Even the difference between User and Library files is pretty opaque. Can't thank you enough for this! Cheers mate! J
